Engineering students at University of Bolton get hands on F1 car

Students at the National Centre for Motorsport Engineering are currently making modifications to the Ensign 180B.
The car, owned by Dr Bob Fernley, is a former Formula 1 car, which also later raced in the US CanAm series.
Students will have the rare opportunity of working directly on the car, taking the theory of the classroom onto the reality of the race track.
As part of the project, students are being guided by a technician, as well as working with motorsport professional Willem Toet.
F1 rules related to aerodynamics have been altered many times over the years, with new regulations due in 2022. ....

This year’s cost cap is a step towards sustainability for Formula racing but the sport is not quite there yet, according to Bob Fernley.
Fernley, the new president of the FIA single-seater commission and former Force India deputy team principal, has highlighted areas in which Formula racing needs to adapt to survive far into the future.
The lower cost cap is something new to Formula 1 this season, with teams restricted to a budget of $145m and that figure is planned to drop to $135m from 2023 onwards, with the hope that reduced operating costs will help teams’ sustainability. ....

Fernley announced as head of FIA single-seater commission

Bob Fernley will take over from Stefano Domenicali as the head of the FIA’s single-seater commission, it has been announced.
The former deputy team principal of Force India, Fernley left the team in 2018 after its purchase by Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll and subsequent transformation into Racing Point.
Under his watch, the team transformed into one of the strongest midfield outfits on the grid, finishing top five in the constructor’s standings for three consecutive seasons prior to his departure.
Since then, he briefly worked as head of McLaren’s IndyCar project, but resigned after the team’s failure to qualify Fernando Alonso for the 2019 Indy 500. ....
