'Central belt bias' claim in row over access to lifeline Covid business relief

A north-east business owner who suffered a £3million drop in turnover during lockdown has accused the Scottish Government of “neglecting” calls for financial help in the region while giving hundreds of thousands of pounds to central belt competitors.
The claim by King Foods managing director John King follows concerns about access to a Covid support scheme in a tight timeframe around Christmas.
The fund was first publicised on December 5 last year with just a nine-day window for submissions and supporting evidence to help the food and drinks sector.
Mr King, whose Aberdeen-based company supplies chilled and frozen food to hotels and restaurants from Elgin to Dundee, said: “I’ve been left with no option but to get a loan while competitors got as much as half a million. ....

AS the Scottish Government announces its lock down easing plan, Scottish Bakers is asking that the current takeaway restrictions, that limit members’ food-to-go operations, are lifted on 5
th April when certain other non-essential retail can re-open.
This request for an easing of these restrictions comes as Scottish Bakers release the results of a recent member survey, laying bear the huge impact COVID has had on Scotland’s much-loved high street bakers.
Scottish Bakers, the industry association which supports bakers throughout Scotland, conducted a survey of its members in late February to ascertain the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on their businesses and the outlook for the sector as a whole. ....

Scottish Bakers is calling on government for additional support after a survey conducted amongst its members last month revealed the harsh impact of coronavirus.
Scottish Bakers members are made up of hundred of high street bakeries and cafes, as well as wholesalers supplying the hospitality sector along with schools, hospitals and works canteens. Collectively, the members employ more than 12,000 workers across Scotland.
The association said that despite working hard to introduce new ways to adapt to the tough rules introduced over the past year to limit the spread of coronavirus, the sector has been hard hit. ....

Scottish wholesalers given relief grants of up to £500k


Dunns Food & Drinks CEO and SWA chairman Julie Dunn received a grant of £500k
The Scottish government has named 42 wholesalers that have shared in a grant pot of £5.5m.
Five businesses received the maximum £500,000 relief, with the remaining £3m shared out between 37 operators. The smallest grant was just shy of £8,000.
The Grocer understands applications for aid via the Food and Drink Resilience Fund totalled around £15m, with the Scottish Wholesale Association calling for further financial support.
The Scottish government increased the initial fund of £5m by £500,000 following the volume of applications in December.
SWA chairman Julie Dunn’s company Dunns Food & Drinks was one of the wholesalers to receive £500,000, alongside William Morton, Allson Wholesale, JB Foods and Braehead Foods. ....

Grants for Scottish wholesalers thought to be oversubscribed

The new £5m Scottish Food and Drink Resilience Fund is said to be ‘oversubscribed’ as the week-long application window closed.
The Scottish government is set to pay out thousands of pounds in grants to struggling wholesalers before the end of the year, The Grocer understands.
However, Scottish Wholesale Association CEO Colin Smith confirmed applications have exceeded the amount of funding on offer, which could lead to some businesses missing out.
The SWA worked alongside the Scottish government over the seven-day application period assisting members and non-members with their claims. ....
