NOSTALGIA: When a bomb fell on Pontypool Market in the Second World War air raids

THE only bomb to fall directly on Pontypool during WWII fell on the market on Market Street.
This photograph shows the day after the bombing raid and crowds gathered to watch the fire service and builders making the market roof safe.
The building on the right had to be demolished afterwards and is now the site of the cafe and offices.
The Royal Ordinance Factory at Glascoed was opened in April 1940 and instantly became a target for bombing. German planes were thought to use Pontypool Park’s Folly Tower as a guide to finding the factory and so it was demolished shortly afterwards in the war and it took until the 1990s for it to be rebuilt. ....
