MADISON HEIGHTS/HAZEL PARK With the new year in full swing, communities across the country are hoping to see a return to normalcy as the vaccine rollout continues and society slowly becomes safe enough to fully reopen.
Leaders at the local level are bracing for more challenges, but at the same time they see abundant opportunity for meaningful progress.
In a series of emails, officials from Hazel Park and Madison Heights shared their goals, hopes and concerns for 2021.

“In some ways, 2021 will be no different than 2020,” Bliss predicted. “At least to start. We still must keep taxes and fees as low as possible, as our residents work to recover from this economic downturn. We also must continue to prioritize the health and safety of our staff and citizens. ....

City officials review progress made during tumultuous year


The outdoor murals at Civic Center Park and Rosie’s Park are among the most vivid accomplishments of the Madison Heights Arts Board. The mural at Rosie’s Park was completed last year by artist Jennifer Ramirez. The year 2020 saw new events introduced by the Arts Board as well.

MADISON HEIGHTS City officials in Madison Heights say that the city’s new long-term strategic planning process has proven to be a success, with many goals having been fulfilled.
At a meeting Dec. 7, officials took stock of the progress made so far and began considering other areas of focus for the community.
“(The process) has focused the city’s spending and efforts on the city’s significant issues to make real progress in only two years,” Madison Heights City Manager Melissa Marsh said via email. “In 2018 we started a new focused strategic plan to guide our activities and investment into the future. This was to make sure that we were focusing our efforts on programs and projects that were important to our residents and that when money is tight, we are spending in the areas where it matters most.” ....
