Endangered Candy Darter Fish Wins 368 Stream Miles of Protected Critical Habitat in Virginia, West Virginia

W.V. In response to a decade of action from conservation groups, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today finalized critical habitat protection for the candy darter, a small, brightly colored fish, under the Endangered Species Act.
“Protecting critical habitat for the candy darter will help this little fish stave off extinction and will save a beautiful piece of Appalachia’s rich natural heritage for future generations,” said Tierra Curry, a senior scientist at the Center for Biological Diversity. ....

NORWALK, CT – About two dozen fish raised in The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk recently were turned loose into a remote ancestral stream in Tennessee, the latest release that s part of a shared effort to save its endangered species.

The fish – the Barrens topminnow (Fundulus julisia) – is a colorful 4-inch-long fish found only in streams and springhead pools on the Barrens Plateau in middle Tennessee. Due to declining numbers and loss of critical habitat, the species was officially classified as Endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in October 2019. ....
