Some state lawmakers say many Missourians are feeling left out of the state’s coronavirus vaccine efforts. The Missouri House Committee on Health and Mental Health Policy held a public hearing this week to hear from state officials about Missouri’s vaccination plan and the state ranking low in the rate at which citizens are getting immunized.

Robert Knodell, the governor’s deputy chief of staff, says the state has vaccinated 7% of its population.
“Which if you look at the latest data from Kansas, they are at 6.6%. If you look at Illinois, they are at 6.8%. If you look at Iowa, they are at 6.3%. So, we’re seeing some good progress,” says Knodell. ....

Missouri Data Shows Expanding 'Vaccine Deserts' In St. Louis And Kansas City Metros

An expanding portion of St. Louis and Kansas City are considered “vaccine deserts,” or areas with limited-to-no access to the COVID-19 vaccine, according to analysis by a consulting firm hired by the state.
Vaccine deserts are expanding in the state’s biggest cities despite shrinking for the rest of the state as more providers begin administering the vaccine.
The findings were shared by Deloitte Consulting Thursday afternoon during a meeting of Missouri’s Advisory Committee on Equitable COVID Vaccine Distribution.
Deloitte’s analysis, based on data from Jan. 18, suggests a growing inequity in vaccine access within North St. Louis and the city center as well as the I-435 corridor in Kansas City. ....

Feb. 4 JEFFERSON CITY The mass Covid-19 vaccination events to be set up mostly across rural Missouri by the National Guard will likely not take place in Kansas City and St. Louis, state officials told lawmakers Wednesday.
The state s plan is to instead let hospitals with high patient volumes in urban areas handle most of the vaccinations there. Officials will make exceptions for the National Guard to hold smaller events in the two cities, targeting what they termed vulnerable populations.
That is our counterbalance, health department director Dr. Randall Williams said in a hearing on vaccine distribution before the House health and mental health policy committee. ....
