More women than men lost their jobs globally during the Covid-19 pandemic, statistics released ahead of International Women’s Day have revealed.
United Association of South Africa (UASA) trade union spokesperson Abigail Moyo said the organisation supported the IndustriALL Global Union’s campaign to combat the ‘regressive impacts of Covid 19 on women workers’ and called on trade unions to reflect on gender inequality in the workplace to mark the day.

Denel corporate office in Irene.
Denel executives jumping ship following the national Budget presentation last week is nothing less than disgraceful, leaving workers stranded and puzzled about their future, trade union UASA has said.

The municipality said that the figures were drastic and it suggested that Durban residents were now more determined to find work.
“However, the hope of finding work does not appear to be met by enough job opportunities – only 49 000 more people found jobs last quarter. For every 1 person who found a job last quarter, 2.4 more people were left looking for work,” the municipality said. ....
