AUGUSTA After four decades of service to United Way of Kennebec Valley, Director of Finance Wendy Beaudoin has announced her plans to retire from the organization in March. UWKV has hired Kelly Wasson as the organization’s incoming director of finance, effective Feb. 1.

Beaudoin joined United Way in 1981 as a administrative assistant, and her position has evolved with the nonprofit’s needs. Over the course of her career, she helped United Way grow from a two-person operation raising $298,000 to four-person staff raising $1.66 million and serving 57,534 people in 2020, the highest amount in the organization’s 65-year history. ....

Mainer wins international environmental award from National Geographic

A 19-year-old youth advocate from Bangor has been named a National Geographic Young Explorer, an honor bestowed on 24 young environmentalists for their work on conservation, food insecurity, pollution and water access around the globe.
Soon, Amara Ifeji will meet virtually with honorees from New Zealand, Indonesia, Ireland, Nigeria and 11 other countries – all between 17 and 25 – who have already distinguished themselves with world-shaping contributions to environmental education and protection. Ifeji serves as a mentor to numerous young environmentalists across Maine in addition to doing her own work in environmental science and policy.

BANGOR, Maine Bangor school officials held a press conference Wednesday to address the findings of a months-long investigation into claims of racism made by students at Bangor High School.
The investigation began after five students shared their experiences with racism at the school with the Bangor Daily News in June. The school district launched an internal investigation into the reports, created a Title IX and Affirmative Action Coordinator position, and began diversity training for students and staff. ....
