I always wanted to be a speed-eating, eighteen-wheeling, gearjamming truck-driving man. A long haul, chicken-lights-blazing, hammer-down cowboy with a fat load and nothing to lose on the look-see for plain wrappers, Tijuana taxis, local yokels, and everything in between. Alas, my vision’s on a par with that of Jose Feliciano, and I can’t see Jack Shit without a pair of corrective lenses approximately the thickness of that of the Hubble Space Telescope. Give me weed, whites, and wine, and show me a sign, and I will run over that sign, and flatten a couple of Volkswagens for good measure. I’m pretty much deaf to boot, which is why I make such an excellent music critic.

In the time capsule today…
We find a noir mystery film in theaters starring Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway. “Chinatown” was inspired by the California Water Wars, a series of disputes in which Los Angeles secured water rights from the Owens Valley, located 200 miles away. Once the aqueducts were built, the Owens Valley turned into unproductive desert.
We find the kidnapping of 19-year-old newspaper heiress Patty Hearst from her Berkeley apartment. Violent left-wing anarchist group, the Symbionese Liberation Army, claimed responsibility, and attempted to negotiate the release of their imprisoned members. When that failed, they demanded a free-food distribution program.
Saskatchewan Express was at Yorkdale School, working with the students to teach a bit of music and a bit of choreography, before putting on a performance with the kids in the afternoon. Group members Aaron Balkaran, Cassandra Curley, Laura Seres and Joel Richard Stanley teach kids from Yorkdale dance moves and the song Taking Care of Business by Bachmann Turner Overdrive. The members of the group say teaching kids like those at Yorkdale is one of the more rewarding parts of the job, and the kids from Yorkdale were really into learning the song. article continues below
