The city of Busselton, on the coast of Western Australia, awaits the arrival of 3,000 tonnes of concrete and steel whales that have invaded the deep waters of the Indian Ocean.
Leviathan is part of the Ocean Observatory Underwater Discovery Center in AustraliaA project designed by marine contractors Baca Architects and Subcon, costing A $ 30 million, about $ 23 million.Located at the end of Busselton PierOpened in December 2022, it will be Australia’s largest natural and marine observatory.

World's Largest Natural Marine Observatory Takes the Shape of a Whale

The $30 million project will take guests through a landscaped sequence from their moment of arrival. Bustleton Jetty Chairman Barry House says: “This is as authentic as it gets, because people are in the tank and the fish are looking in. By adding underwater dining, underwater sculptures, marine art and other features, this project will enhance Bustleton Jetty’s 155-year-old experience.”

The marine research center will promote clean oceans and feature public interaction with a research and laboratory to educate people about climate change. Chairman House goes on to say that, This is an exciting stage of the project, to get feedback on the design that will be a catalyst for drawing people to Western Australia from all over the world, especially those who love the ocean. ....

Whilst the solution may appear to be design driven, it was developed within the strict budget and programme set by the client. Therefore, design decisions were made with the view of adding value, not just cost, and Stolon worked to identify suppliers and sub-contractors that fit the budget.

The sculptural forms were designed to maximise sunlight into the courtyard and minimise the effect on neighbours.  The architectural angles are softened by the planting, reflecting pools, and the dappled light on the tiled facades.  A 15º geometry was used throughout the development, in a plan to maintain outlook from neighbours and in section to maintain daylight/sunlight, as well as meet suit the minimum pitch for tiles and roof-lights. The front block is divided in two with a dramatic pedestrian route-way through to the new homes at the rear, which also allows the morning sun to stretch into the rear of the site.  ....

Furthermore, developers are keen to maintain an environmentally friendly focus, with plans specifying low carbon energy generation.
The developers also hope it will act as a “living sculpture” providing a scenic backdrop to a dreamy holiday escape.
