Vadodara: When 35-year-old Rajesh Patel (name changed) landed up at her clinic with severe infection in his nose, she was surprised. Patel’s throat had burn injuries and his nasal mucosa was severely damaged. On enquiring, Patel told Dr Parita Pandya Shah that he had been drinking piping hot ‘ukalo’ (mixture of herbs) over the last few weeks to increase his immunity.
“Having too much hot herbal mixture burnt his throat. I did almost 75 surgeries of mucormycosis during the second wave of Covid and most of the patients had tried some or other home remedy. Many of these mucormycosis patients had squeezed lemon juice in their nostrils as they felt that it would prevent the virus from entering their body through the nose,” Shah, an ENT specialist said.

The lengthy events put the focus on areas of need that have been exposed by the ongoing health crisis, including a dearth of affordable housing amid a hot real-estate market and continued high demand for rental assistance.
