Florida Wildlife Care cited for keeping animals without a license

Florida Wildlife Care, an injured animal rehabilitation organization, has again become caught up in a case involving animals being held in poor conditions and without valid state and federal licenses.
Its longtime leader, Leslie Straub, has been cited for operating without licensing by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission after an investigator found animals at her home including hawks and an owl that he said were in dirty enclosures and without clean water.
Meanwhile, Straub had been trying to get the Alachua County Commission to provide space for a rehab and education center on her organization s Cuscowilla property near Micanopy, but Commissioner Marihelen Wheeler said Straub didn’t provide requested information. ....

Ron Cunningham: Create new purpose for Boulware Springs building

Never forget that Lewisville was almost born at a picnic on the edge of Paynes Prairie.
William Lewis was an influential Hog Town planter with a bit of an ego. And so, when Alachua County residents gathered for a picnic, on Sept. 6, 1853, to decide what to name a proposed new town and whether it should become the new county seat Lewis was pitched a deal by fellow grower James B. Bailey.
Support the new town and “we’ll call it Lewisville,” Bailey promised. But if it becomes the new county seat “we’ll call it Gainesville.”
This in honor of Edmund Gaines, the American general who captured Aaron Burr (but who, ironically, couldn’t beat the Seminoles, which is probably why we never named the stadium after him). ....
