Work on new Welshpool school building to begin next month

Work is set to start in February on a new building for Welshpool s only Welsh-medium primary school. North Wales construction company Wynne Construction Ltd has been appointed by Powys County Council to build the 150-place school in Howell Drive for Ysgol Gymraeg Y Trallwng. Powys Council has agreed to pay an extra £1.35 million to meet additional costs for the project. Cllr Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member for Education and Property, said: “It’s great that this project has moved a step closer after experiencing some setbacks that were completely beyond the control of the council. “Our exciting plans for Ysgol Gymraeg y Trallwng will provide our learners with 21st Century facilities while preserving and modernising a Grade II listed building for the community of Welshpool to use.

Plans for holiday flats at historic building withdrawn

PLANNING applications for a cafe and holiday accommodation at one of Presteigne’s most recognisable buildings have been withdrawn. To make alterations to The Judge’s Lodging Museum, full and listed building planning applications were submitted to Powys County Council in September, 2020. The Judge’s Lodging Trust who run the museum said that income from the proposals could help secure the long-term future of the Grade II-listed neo-classical building on Broad Street, which shows how judges, their staff and prisoners would have lived in the 19th Century. But documents lodged as part of the application show that there were concerns that the proposals would change the building’s aesthetic too much, and warned that the plans lacked detail.

Powys Council set to go ahead with Llanfair schools merger

PROPOSALS to merge a secondary and primary school into an all through four to 18 year old school in Llanfair Caerenion were supported by 52 per cent of the people who took part in a consultation on the proposal. At Powys County Council’s cabinet meeting on Tuesday, January 12, councillors are set to discuss the process of amalgamating the schools. A report by education officer, Marianne Evans, said: “Based on the findings of the consultation, the advice is that the council should proceed with the proposal to amalgamate Llanfair Caereinion County Primary School, and Caereinion High School, to establish a new all-age school by publishing a statutory notice.
