Government schools better off than private ones on attendance scale

Days after reopening of schools across the state for Class V-VII students, turnout in private schools remains dismal. The government schools had implemented the reopening orders as soon as these were issued, while most private schools chose to wait for parental consent before calling students to attend classes.
As of today, private schools in the city are getting 10-12 per cent attendance in Class V to Class VIII. Dr Anita Bhalla, secretary of Sahodaya Schools and Principal, Bhavans’ SL School, said the low turnout was due to multiple reasons. The extreme cold weather conditions and the suspicions regarding pandemic are the main reasons for low attendance in middle classes. Most parents are waiting till Lohri to send their wards as there could be change in weather after Lohri.” ....

Alka Sharma, who received the prestigious CBSE ‘Best Teacher’ award for the year 2019-20 in the primary teacher category, believes in her mantra of 4Ds – determination, devotion, dedication and discipline.
Being the only teacher from Punjab to have won the honour, this teacher from Bhavan’s SL School, Amritsar says, it s time that approach towards primary education changes in India. She shares her ideas and understanding of her profession in an interaction with Neha Saini. Excerpts
What has been your approach towards teaching all these years?
When I started teaching 12 years back, I noticed that the basic understanding of primary education is focused only on the completion of curriculum. Learning has to be child-centric, especially in early classes, where a child’s ability has to be explored. My approach is quite simple – one has to come down to the level of children while making them learn. You cannot force feed texts and concep ....
