A million SASSA claimants can now 'skip queues' with new booking system


Some SASSA grant recipients can now ‘skip the queues’
The new system will allow any of the 997 000 people claiming disability grants in SA to arrange a time and date for their medical assessments. That means there will be fewer ‘speculative’ trips to local SASSA offices, in the hope that a healthcare professional can see a client before the end of a long day queuing up. Minister Lindiwe Zulu declared:
“The online booking will address challenges associated with long queues at local offices and ensure that SASSA complies with COVID-19 regulations. Food Prices Latest: South Africans get poorer as wages slow to rise
Food prices are rising, winter is coming, and the cold is likely to exacerbate misery and anger in a large portion of our population
South Africans are getting poorer as job losses continue and food prices, electricity and transport costs spiral out of proportion to wage and grant increases.
This was the warning from the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group which released its latest March 2021 Household Affordability Index recently. The group conducts food price survey across the country in KwaZulu-Natal, the Western Cape and Gauteng.
According to the latest data the Pietermaritzburg Household Affordability Index, annualised for March 2021, showed that inflation on the Pietermaritzburg Household Food Basket was 12,6%. The cost of this basket increased by R406,46 over the past year, with the total cost of the basket now R3 627,45.   ....

'No reason to be apologetic': Mboweni on tiny social grant increases

Finance minister Tito Mboweni says the government has “no reason to be apologetic” for raising social grants by less than the prevailing inflation rate.
Mboweni was responding to questions at a virtual post-budget press conference where he was asked if the government was not concerned about a political backlash after he tabled modest increases to social grants.
The inflation rate is 3.3%, the lowest it has been since 2004. ....
