Special Reserve puts away Strike Power en route to his victory in the Maryland Sprint Stakes
Trainer Michael Maker has a knack for turning claiming horses into graded stakes winners. He did it on Friday when Last Judgment, a $62,500 claim, won the Grade 3 Pimlico Special on the opening day of Preakness weekend at Old Hilltop in Baltimore, Md. He accomplished the feat again on Preakness day Saturday when Special Reserve captured the Grade 3, $150,000 Maryland Sprint Stakes, three races after Maker claimed the 5-year-old Midshipman gelding for $40,000 at Oaklawn Park. ....

After a historically different Preakness Stakes last year, this year s middle jewel of the Triple Crown will return as the second race on May 15.
The Preakness was postponed to Oct. 3 last year amid the coronavirus pandemic, which marked the latest running in a history that dates back to 1873.
RACING RETURNS TO PIMLICO
Racing returned April 22 to Old Hilltop as Pimlico began its 23-day Preakness Meet.
And with the Preakness a little more than three weeks away, preparations are well underway, and because of COVID-19, it will have a different look this year than in the past, including how many people are allowed inside. ....

The 146th Grade 1 $1 million Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore on Saturday, the second jewel of Thoroughbred racing s Triple Crown, will be run at 1 3/16 miles. The Preakness is the centerpiece of nine graded stakes races to be run at Old Hilltop on Friday and Saturday.
NBC Sports will broadcast the Preakness live, with coverage beginning Saturday at 5 p.m. ET on NBC. Coverage from Pimlico begins today at 5 p.m. ET on NBCSN with the 97th running of the Grade 2 George E. Mitchell Black-Eyed Susan Stakes, and continues Saturday at 2 p.m. ET on NBCSN. Over the two days, NBC Sports will cover nine races live. ....

What’s Preakness without ‘Coach?’ Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas has pulled off some major upsets at Old Hilltop, but this shouldn’t be one of them. This son of American Pharoah has distinguished himself in his last two races, winning a maiden $50k claiming heat and a first-level allowance test. Before and including those, there’s nothing in his past performance lines to suggest he can threaten in here. Love ya, Coach, but we’ll pass.
2. KEEPMEINMIND (DIODORO/COHEN) - 15/1
At two this guy displayed a world of talent. He finished in the money in a maiden race, the Gr. 1 Breeders Futurity and the Gr. 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
