Fiesta fundraisers help performers cover costs

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Old Spanish Days events are free, but performers and their parents cover plenty of costs.
The parents of female dancers said they pay about $350 per custom-made dress for Fiesta performances, and that does not include the material.
The shoes cost about $300 a pair.

Zermeño s shoes (yes, they wear the same size) until she tracked them down at a friend s home.

Solvang man arrested with replica gun at Mission Santa Inés
SOLVANG, Calif. - A 23-year-old Solvang man was arrested and faces gun charges after he was allegedly seen walking around Old Mission Santa Inés with a replica handgun.
On Sunday around 4:45 p.m., Santa Barbara County Sheriff s Deputies responded to the mission for a report of a man with a gun.
When deputies arrived on scene they immediately set up a perimeter and began evacuating the area, the sheriff s office said.
The man, described as wearing a red and black flannel shirt and a gray backwards hat, was seen walking in the garden area adjacent to the historic building. ....

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -A former mayor and environmental leader is being remembered by family, friends and community members as a man who made a difference in Santa Barbara and the nation.
Conklin was 75 when he died of brain cancer at the Serenity House in May.
Thanks to the easing of COVID19 restrictions people were able to mingle at the Old Mission Santa Barbara and share their memories.
Friends said Conklin liked to be in charge and planned every minute of the celebration of life on the steps of the Mission where he was interred in the mausoleum. ....

Yes, people should be able to have a clear view of the Fourth of July fireworks display from the Santa Barbara Mission, 2201 Laguna St., according to Suzy Plott, the community development and marketing manager at the Old Mission Santa Barbara.
“The only thing that would get in the way of the view would be fog, but hopefully that would not be an issue in the evening,” Plott said. “Although it is not an official Mission event, watching the fireworks from the Mission lawn or the Rose Garden seems to be pretty popular. ....

SOLVANG, Calif. A Santa Ynez Valley non-profit is teaming up with local restaurants to help those struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The pandemic is closing in on the one year anniversary of when it started. And many families and people are struggling financially.
The Santa Ynez Valley People Helping People (PHP) is working with local restaurants to help those in need, especially with meals.
Bell’s Restaurant, a restaurant in Los Alamos, is partnering with PHP to help Santa Ynez Valley families.
Bell’s Restaurant opened in 2018. Their owners Daisy and Greg Ryan said the community needs to come together during tough times. ....
