Aggressive Eddy County roadwork plan pays dividends


An ongoing aggressive plan laid out nearly two years ago by the Eddy County Public Works Department to improve county roads resulted in hundreds of miles of completed work.
Public Works Department data from July 2019 to September 2021 showed 665 miles of Eddy County roads will be bladed with a road grader, chip sealed or paved.
A majority of Eddy County roads, or 346 miles, are chip sealed and 257 miles are bladed and another 60 miles are paved, per the data.
Total cost of the work was $52 million as $20 million was allocated for work on collector roads across the county.
The Federal Highway Administration (FHA) defines collector roads as major and minor roads that connect local roads and streets with major thoroughfares. ....

Gov. Lujan Grisham signs capital outlay bill, funding local projects


LAS CRUCES - The capital outlay bill signed last week by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham includes more than $28 million in funding for projects in Doña Ana County, as well as millions for other projects in southern New Mexico.
The bill funds more than $511 million in projects throughout the state, including roughly $64 million for water and wastewater improvements, $53 million for roads, $49 million for higher education, $48 million for public safety and $8 million for acequias, dams, and ditches. There is also $12.5 million to support Local Economic Development Act projects and $10 million for health facilities and prisons.
Lujan Grisham used her line-item veto authority to strike less than two percent of the projects included in the bill, explaining in a news release that the projects she vetoed lacked proper planning, had unused funds from previous years or were not large enough to qualify for capital appropriation. ....

New Mexico State Police say officer wounded after gunfire near Carlsbad

CARLSBAD, New Mexico The New Mexico State Police said a local law enforcement officer was wounded Wednesday night south of Carlsbad in a confrontation with a suspect that triggered gunfire.
While NMSP officials didn t indicate the events surrounding the gunfire, they said the suspect was taken into custody unharmed.
According to NMSP, an Eddy County Sheriff s deputy suffered non-life-threatening injures that were unrelated to the gunfire.
The officer-involved shooting occurred near the Old Cavern Highway and W. Derrick Road and NMSP said it was investigating to determine exactly what happened. ....
