Covid-19: Risk-based approach instead of blanket MCO will boost tourism, says MATTA

We welcome the Prime Minister s announcement on this new approach as this is a positive step. He acknowledged that there needed to be a more holistic and scientific approach rather than imposing a total lockdown on an entire state or area. Travel restrictions were the main crunch that industry was facing, its president Datuk Tan Kok Liang said on Wednesday (March 17). Tan also said the special RM3,000 grant to more than 5,000 tour agencies registered with Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry was a step forward in helping those badly affected by the pandemic. We had asked for a RM10,000 grant when we met the tourism minister recently but RM3,000 was announced instead.

Stakeholders push Malaysia reopening borders to vaccinate travellers

Stakeholders push Malaysia reopening borders to vaccinate travellers Share Various stakeholders have called the federal government to come up with a proper plan for Malaysia reopening to vaccinate travellers. Bukit Gasing assemblyman Rajiv Rishyakaran suggested for the federal government to open the country’s borders to tourists and business travellers who have received the vaccine. Malaysian Association of Hotels president N Subramaniam and Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) president Tan Kok Liang have expressed their support for the proposal. They also called for a concrete plan for the reopening as soon as possible. In a report by Free Malaysia Today, Subramaniam said that the country must establish a “special pass” system for inoculated travellers. He added that the tourism industry’s frontliners must be vaccinated before they begin to accommodate foreign tourists.

Could Malaysia's fake halal meat scandal impact its export reputation?

February 07, 2021 Shoppers at a market in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. File photo: Reuters For Syahiirah Junaidi, a Kuala Lumpur resident, the recent halal meat scandal in Malaysia is beyond her control. The country was in December rocked by reports that a cartel had for decades been allegedly bribing officials to import and sell Muslims non-certified meat, including horse and kangaroo when the meat was neither ritually slaughtered according to Islamic custom nor derived from approved sources. While Syahiirah says she cannot do much but continue to take the word of supermarkets that pledge their meat is halal, or permissible, she knows older residents would not be as forgiving.
