Udall Foundation honors students tackling tribal, environmental issues

The Udall Foundation has recognized three Yale undergraduates for their commitment to careers in tribal public policy, the environment, or Native health care, as well as their leadership potential and academic accomplishments.
Sophomore Joe Boland has been named a 2021 Udall Scholar in the tribal public policy category; junior Abey Philip has been recognized with a Udall Scholar honorable mention in the environmental category; and junior John Crawford has been selected as a 2021 Native American Congressional Intern. ....

Haaland: Government 'ready to solve' crisis of missing and murdered Native Americans


“For too long this issue has been swept under the rug,” Haaland, the nation’s first indigenous Cabinet secretary, said Tuesday. She cited statistics indicating more than 90 percent of indigenous women experience violence, including more than half involving an intimate partner.
“I believe we are at an inflection point,” Haaland said. “We have a president who has promised to prioritize this issue and ensure that Native American leaders have a seat at the table.”

Haaland said the unit was part of a “whole-of-government” approach to addressing issues, saying that “for too long, Indian issues were relegated to tribal offices within federal agencies.” ....

Samantha Maltais will be the first member of the Wampanoag Tribe to enroll at Harvard Law School.
Samantha Maltais’ mother likes to tell the story of how her then 7-year-old grew angry over a violent raid on a smoke shop that led to the arrests of members of the Narragansett Indian Tribe. “Don’t these people know we have rights?” the child had asked.
Maltais doesn’t remember asking that, but the story reflects her understanding, even at a young age, of how the law impacts day-to-day lives of Native people. She grew up on Martha’s Vineyard listening to tribal council meetings for the Aquinnah Wampanoag and to consultations with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Her mother, Cheryl Andrews-Maltais, is chairwoman of the tribe. ....
