1925 (dated) 1 : 2900000 Description This is a striking 1925 chromolithograph railroad map of Argentina and Chile. The map covers from Atlantic to Pacific and from Tocopilla to Isla Chiloe and Rawson. Railroad lines are coded by color and design, with a focus, in red, on the routes operated by the Buenos Aires and Pacific Railway - who sponsored the publication of this map. This map was likely made to spur additional British investment in Argentine railroad infrastructure - much of which was already heavily leveraged to British consortiums. Insets in the lower right detail important connections in Buenos Aires, Mendoza, San Juan, and San Rafael. ....
1857 (dated) 1 : 920000 Description A scarce 1857 Dirección de HidrografÃa nautical chart or maritime map of Jamaica, the Little Cayman Islands, and Southern Cuba. Centered on Pendro Bank (Vibora), the map extends as far north as Nipe Bay on Cuba s north coast, and as far west as Little Cayman. The seas to the south are largely empty, but the Serrana Bank atoll in the western Caribbean is noted. Manuscript Voyage The track of an unknown Spanish voyage that took place in April 1867 is traced. The voyage stops at Kingston, Jamaica, before proceeding westward along the south coast of Cuba. Another voyage - or perhaps the same voyage in February (either before or after) sails northwest towards the Placer de la Vivora, where it mysteriously terminates. ....

1706 (dated) 1 : 700000 Description This is Hubert Jaillot s magnificent 1703/06 map of the Kingdom of Naples. Jaillot, along with the rest of the mapmaking establishment, appears to be largely following the model set by Magini nearly a century before; his depiction of the islands of Tremiti suggest that his direct source - as with many of Jaillot s maps - was an Italy map produced by Nicolas Sanson. The present map, however, is engraved on a larger scale, and has superior detail to any Sanson we have handled. Moreover, Jaillot s map improves on nearly all of its predecessors by the correction of the Gulf of Taranto - here lacking the spurious island of M. Sardo appearing on virtually every map based on the Magini. ....

It was included in Dudley s Arcano del Mare, hailed by Tooley as the first sea atlas in which every chart was based on Mercator’s projection, the first to show prevailing winds and currents in the main harbours and anchorages, the first to give magnetic declination, and the first sea atlas by an Englishman.At least in principle, these navigational notes and the adherence to the Mercator projection would make Dudley s charts the first to be of any use at sea. The present chart exhibits all of these qualities. ....
