WINNIPEG Manitoba opposition wants to see the province beef up ventilation in schools before children return to the classroom in September. On Thursday, NDP Leader Wab Kinew called on the province to proactively increase ventilation in classrooms. Investing in ventilation will help ensure that kids who are too young to be vaccinated right now can still have an additional measure of protection and help ensure that they can all return to what educational experts say is the best approach to learning which is direct face-to-face in-person learning, Kinew said. The province plans to have all Kindergarten to Grade 12 students return to in-class learning full-time on Sept. 7. ....
Friends of the Library of Los Altos has scheduled a used book sale featuring childrenâs books Aug. 5-8 in the Orchard Room of the Los Altos main library, 13 S. San Antonio Road. Hours for the sale are 1-6 p.m. Aug. 5 and 6, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 7 and noon to 3 p.m. Aug. 8 (includes $5-per-bag sale). Teachers may select books for their classrooms at the sale at no charge. The Friends of the Library Books4Schools Fund will cover the cost of the books. Murphy School in Dorchester is one of five Boston schools chosen by Boston Schools Fund to receive a $20,000 grant to “re-center” the social-emotional wellness of students, staff, and families. The grants are part of an overall $250,000 effort by the non-profit to support post-pandemic education in Boston. “It has been a challenge to build strong conditions for all learners who are disproportionately affected by the pandemic,” said Courtney Sheppeck, principal of the Murphy School. “This grant enables us to think creatively about the overall school day and schedule to build an engaging and differentiated day overall. We want to use data to drive daily instruction and receive supports and tools for teachers to differentiate based upon the needs of the students in a systematic cycle.” ....

Not surprisingly, COVID-19 and the economic downturn are affecting the numbers. “Obviously, the pandemic has impacted local revenues and could still cause some unanticipated expenditures both for the schools and the town over the next five months as we navigate the end of FY ‘21. There’s a challenging fiscal outlook for several years ahead as we start to recover from this,” said Schools Finance Dir. Martha Sybert, who presented the budget at a recent School Committee meeting. ....
