Under a recently-approved policy, Oak Ridge students will only have their standardized test scores count as part of their grades if it helps them this school year.
The policy passed Oak Ridge Board of Education on second reading at its March meeting.
Kelly Williams, Oak Ridge Schools executive director of teaching and learning, explained at the board s February meeting the reasoning behind the changes.
“This is due to, as you know, our unstable testing environment over the last few years. We definitely in this unstable atmosphere want to give students the opportunity to raise their grades if they can do so on this assessment, but we do not want it to harm any students’ grades,” she said. ....

The School Board will need to approve it again on second reading for it to go ahead.

How Oak Ridge and Anderson schools are vaccinating teachers and staff

The Anderson County and Oak Ridge school systems are administering COVID-19 vaccines at events Friday for teachers, staff, substitutes and bus drivers.
“To have this available to our teachers will help them feel supported in their efforts to get back to their classes and return to more normal circumstances,” Holly Cross, supervisor of Career Readiness and Communications, told The Oak Ridger.
“It’s getting the vaccine to folks as quickly as possible and in a way that doesn’t inconvenience them,” Ryan Sutton, communications and public relations coordinator for Anderson County Schools, said in a phone interview. He said it would also help establish herd immunity. ....
