This year’s Teagasc hill sheep conference takes place online over two nights. / Clive Wasson The programme of events for this year’s Teagasc hill sheep conference has been announced and includes a wide range of topics including farm production and financial performance, breeding, health and feeding of ewes in late pregnancy. The event will take place over two nights with both event’s proceedings taking place from 8pm to 9pm. The first topic on Wednesday 17 February entails the experience of Donegal hill sheep farmer David McLaughlin, who has been a participant of the Teagasc BETTER Farm Hill Sheep Programme since 2008. ....

Dr. Lesa Thompson Hokkaido University alumna Dr. Lesa Thompson is a Regional Project Officer at the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), Regional Representation for Asia and the Pacific (RRAP) office in Tokyo. Here, she talks about the OIE, Hokkaido University’s Research Center for Zoonosis Control and her days as a student at the Graduate School of Veterinary Science. I first met some students and professors from Hokkaido University’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine who were visiting the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies at the University of Edinburgh. When I found out that their One Health PhD course was open to international applicants, I applied. During my course, I did two internships. Massey University scientist Professor David Hayman has been named the Manawatu Standardâs Person of the Year 2020 for his work studying the coronavirus and for being a local source of information for the public about Covid-19. A world-leading infectious disease specialist and senior lecturer in Masseyâs Institute of Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences, Professor Hayman has spent much of his career studying the Ebola virus, as well as the relationship between viruses and how they are spread between animals and humans (zoonotic transmission), with a particular focus on bats. Scientists suspect the latest coronavirus most likely crossed to humans from bats, which have been the source of several viruses harmful to humans, including Ebola. ....
