Community recovery and resilience has received another huge boost with yesterday’s announcement of over $38 million for projects and community building programs across the shire through Round 2 of the Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund.
Bega Valley Shire Mayor, Cr Russell Fitzpatrick said he was delighted to see this round of funding providing so much to deliver important infrastructure improvements, industry and business development, and positive social, environmental and community outcomes.
“The vision and drive within our community is remarkable and we are extremely thankful for the financial investment in our shire from the federal and state governments,” Cr Fitzpatrick said. ....

Revitalisation and restoration at Cobargo Cemetery
A project to restore and revitalise key infrastructure following the Black Summer bushfires has been completed at the Cobargo Cemetery.
The work included the construction of a new pavilion building, an upgrade to the internal gravel road, the replacement of a storage container lost in the fires, the repair of a bench seat and fencing damaged in the fires, the installation of a new water tank, and construction of a new rock garden.
The Rotary Club of Merimbula also presented the Friends of Cobargo Cemetery with a new ride-on lawn mower and whipper snipper to replace the maintenance equipment lost in the fires. ....

Flood recovery works across shire: Bega Valley

Bega Valley Shire Council is working quickly to ensure safe access for the community and road users across our road network, following the recent flooding.
The shire’s roads and transport stormwater infrastructure have been significantly damaged, with the cumulative impact of seven flood events since February 2020.
Council’s Project Lead – Recovery, Rebuilding and Resilience, Chris Horsburgh says while the shire has experienced floods in the past, the size and location of many of the current damages highlights the unprecedented weather events of the last 18 months.
“Work is currently underway to ensure all roads are accessible, which will continue as the water subsides. Local contractors are engaged to assist in the removal of silt and debris, and clearing roadside drains,” Mr Horsburgh said. ....

Communities host successful Community Recovery Contribution Program events

Bega Multicultural Centre members held a Family Fun Day at Potaroo Palace
Bega Valley Shire Council’s Community Recovery Contribution Program has contributed almost $54,000 to support 23 significant and meaningful events and activities across the shire.
“Through the program, we were able to provide community organisations with up to $2,500 to go towards recovery activities for communities affected by the Black Summer bushfires,” Council’s Director of Community, Environment and Planning, Dr Alice Howe said.
“Activities held have been able to create a positive impact for local communities and in some cases, the local environment.”
A cinema night featuring the Australian film classic, The Castle and the Towamba Hope Music Festival were held in January. More than 150 people attended the festival, which offered a variety of music, woodchopping, chainsaw, slab-making and log chop demonstrations, dance workshops and a jumping castle. ....
