Rockhampton’s three days of the Capricornia Yearling Sale’s Racing Carnival ended in spectacular fashion when the magic million dollars figure was shattered for the first time at Sunday’s yearling sales at the showgrounds.
In further testimony to the confidence in Rockhampton racing, buyers splurged $1.45 million, purchasing 73 yearlings for a new record average of $19,917.
Never before in the history of the sale, which predates 1988, has anywhere close to a million dollars in receipts been realised. ....

The Stewart family’s Oaklands Stud, Toowoomba, looks set to assert its dominance at both Saturday’s Rockhampton feature Capricornia Yearling Sales select races and at the sales on Sunday.
Oaklands will provide four runners in both the $143K CYS 2YO Classic (1200m) and the $93K CYS 3 & 4YO Championship (1300m).
Visiting Sunshine Coast trainer Tom Button, another prominent role player in both features and huge supporter of Oaklands, will saddle up six of their graduates from previous CYS. ....

Ratepayers invited to ride the Rattler for free

Mary Valley Rattler general manager Mike Green said he was pleased to see so many families at the station enjoying the day on Tuesday.
“Local musicians and kids activities kept everyone entertained throughout the day,” he said. “We always enjoy being able to provide a vehicle to bring community together at the Rattler.”
The day got even better for the locals with the announcement of the Rattler Mates program being made available to locals.
“This is a membership-based program with lots of inclusions that can be used throughout the year at the café, in the shop and on the train,” said Mr Green. ....

Rattler records first profit since its return to the tracks

THE Mary Valley Rattler has weathered the COVID storm to record its first operational surplus since returning to the tracks.
The Rattler’s financial report for 2019-20 has revealed the heritage train made $221,000 throughout the financial year, a significant turnaround from the $549,000 deficit recorded the year before.
A big part of this jump was thanks to a $124,000 increase in income from ticket sales, which topped $1.05m for the year.
A significant $370,000 came from “other income”.
Of this, $141,000 came from JobKeeper, while another including $174,000 was accounted in contributed assets, $23,000 in rental income and $13,000 from charitable income and fundraising.
The surplus has reduced the Rattler Railway Company’s net liability position to $663,000, from $884,000. ....
