Sixty years after first opening, the end has come to nuclear power generation at Indian Point. April 30 saw the shutdown of the final operating unit. The moment is being celebrated as a major victory by long-time opponents, who virtually from the start of its operation campaigned to have it closed. In the end, with Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s support, their fears of the dangers posed by a possible nuclear accident won out.
The closing, however, leaves us to deal with serious unanswered questions:
Are we ready for a post-Indian Point future? ....

The last Indian Point nuclear reactor, located 25 miles north of midtown Manhattan, will stop making nuclear power at 11 p.m. Friday.
At the height of its capacity, the 60-year-old Westchester County plant provided about 25 percent of New York City’s power. But its age, proximity to a population center, reduced revenues and political pressure forced Indian Point’s owner, Entergy, to enter into a negotiated agreement to close the facility with New York state and the environmental group Riverkeeper.
Under the 2017 agreement, Unit 2 was shut down last year. Unit 3 is legally obligated to shut down Friday. ....

New York nuclear plant retirement could increase natural gas-fired generation

The Indian Point nuclear power plant in New York will permanently shut down during the evening of April 30 when the 1,041-MW Unit 3 will power down, removing capacity that is likely to be replaced by natural gas-fired generation during higher load periods.

The Indian Point shutdown has been anticipated for some time and we expect few immediate price impacts in the shoulder months, Kieran Kemmerer, power market analyst with S&P Global Platts Analytics, said in an email. During periods of higher load, we anticipate the nuclear generation to be replaced by gas-fired generation in the region running at higher capacity factors. Additionally, exports to New England from downstate New York are likely to fall as more New York generation flows south into load centers. ....

The Indian Point Energy Center (Indian Point) permanently stopped generating electricity on April 30, 2021, when it retired its last operating nuclear reactor, Unit 3, earlier than originally planned. The Indian Point nuclear power plant began operations in 1962 and produced over 565 terawatthours (TWh) of electricity in the 59 years it was open. The Unit 3 retirement removes almost 1,040 megawatts (MW) of nuclear generating capacity from New York State, leaving about 3,200 MW of remaining nuclear capacity at three plants in upstate New York.
Indian Point is located in Buchanan, New York, about 25 miles north of Midtown Manhattan. The plant had three pressurized water reactors. Unit 1 began operations in 1962 and shut down in 1974. Units 2 and 3 began operations in 1974 and 1976, respectively; Unit 2 retired in April 2020. The Consolidated Edison grid system distributed the plant’s electricity to the five boroughs of New Yo ....
