Ballina council debates South Ballina Beach 4WD access, again – The Echo

An attempt to enlarge the list of approved 4WD beach users allowed to access South Ballina Beach failed to get the numbers to progress at the last Ballina Shire Council meeting.
The motion from Cr Keith Williams thanked the Minister for Crown Lands for closing the beach but asked that community consultation be undertaken to consider certain local beach users who have been excluded from 4WD access, such as members of fishing clubs, wildlife rescuers and the disabled.

Celebrate Compost Awareness Week at Ballina Community Garden – The Echo

Getting excited about Compost Week 2021. Ballina Shire Council.
This year, International Compost Awareness Week runs from 2–8 May with the theme ‘Better Soil, Better Life, Better Future’.
The week aims to improve awareness on the importance of the role of compost as a valuable resource and to promote compost use, knowledge and products.
To celebrate, Ballina Shire Council has partnered with North East Waste, Ballina Community Garden and The Story Tree to curate a wonderful morning of free activities for all ages on Sunday 2 May from 9.30am to midday.
The morning will be held at the abundant Ballina Community Garden on the corner of Swift and Clarence Streets in Ballina. It will feature engaging compost workshops that welcome questions and the sharing of ideas. Families will also be able to make their own plastic-free beeswax wraps and listen to award-winning storyteller Jenni Cargill-Strong. ....

Farmers market expansion
An expansion request for Ballina Farmers Market was approved at Commemoration Park, in spite of councillors expressing some concerns about parking. Following will be a DA, likely to request a doubling of the market size to sixty stalls.

Major projects at Ballina, Lennox Head face months of delays

Two major building projects in the Ballina Shire could face months of delays after Aboriginal artefacts were found.
Upgrade works at Ross Park in Lennox Head and Shaws Bay in Ballina have been put on hold due to separate discoveries.
At the latest council meeting, on April 22, Councillor Sharon Cadwallader asked Matthew Wood, council’s director of Planning and Environmental Health Division, about the future of the projects.
She asked why $150,000 of expenditure at Ross Park was delayed to next financial year.
“Am I right to assume that this is Aboriginal cultural heritage hold ups?” she asked. ....
