Bhashani's support for non-cooperation movement

Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani addressed a mass gathering at Paltan Maidan on March 9. In his address, he proclaimed full support to the ongoing non-cooperation movement and called upon the people to continue the struggle unless success was achieved. He further stated that if the government does not accept Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman s demand by March 25, he would join hands with Bangabandhu and launch a mass movement.
Reciting the Quranic verse La-kum dee-nu-koom wa lee-ya deen (For you is your religion, and for me is my religion)Bhashani demanded that Yahya Khan accept the independence of East Bengal and thus, maintain a friendly relationship between the two wings of Pakistan. The Maulana accused Yahya of violating the basic norms of democracy by postponement of the National Assembly without consulting the majority party leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. ....

DACCA: Awami League Chief Mujibur Rahman today [March 3] urged the authorities to withdraw the forces from the city and hand over power to the elected representatives of the people. DHAKA, March 2, 2021 (BSS) – Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had talked about independence at a rally at Paltan Maidan on March 3 too ahead of his historic March 7 speech.
On the next day, the daily Ittefaq and daily Azad published details about the rally arranged by Chhatra League and Sramik League.
In the rally, Bangabandhu called upon the people to continue their struggle for independence even if he could not stay alive.
“Even if I die, the seven crore people will witness that the country becomes truly independent. This may be my last speech. If I do not stay alive, the movement cannot be stopped,” Bangabandhu had said. ....

In March 1971, the vision of independent national sovereignty became politically dominant, for the first time. Its organizational strength and mass appeal remained outside the halls of constitutionalism, where its origins lay and where student organizations had nurtured its evolution; but now it began to acquire influential Bengali adherents in government circles.
On 2 March, spontaneous hartals occurred all over East Pakistan. People came from all over Dhaka and suburbs to the Bat-tala at Dhaka University, where crowds sang of national independence, SBKCSP (Bangla Kendriya Chhatra Sangram Parishad) leaders solemnly declared independence, and A S M Abdur Rob, a Student League leader and vice president of the Dhaka University Central Student Union, hoisted the flag of Bangladesh to the tumultuous applause and cries of “Joy Bangla”. ....
