Gerald Lewis Jr. Selected as UConn's Next Chief of Police


Lewis brings decades of experience in public safety and higher education to UConn

Gerald Lewis Jr., chief of police and associate vice president of public safety at The University of Texas at San Antonio, has been selected as the next chief of police at the UConn Police Department, President Thomas C. Katsouleas announced Wednesday.
Lewis has three decades’ worth of deep roots in public safety, including 26 years in the New Jersey State Police and two years as chief of the East Carolina University Police Department before moving to UTSA in 2016.
Lewis was selected after a highly competitive nationwide search for the UConn police chief position, in which he will lead 100 sworn police officers assigned to seven campuses across the state. He will begin at UConn on July 1. ....

Student Government Association Hosts Community First Town Hall


On Wednesday, March 24, the University’s Student Government Association (SGA) held a Community First Town Hall webinar via Zoom at 6 p.m., inviting students to attend and ask any questions related to the handling of COVID-19 on campus. The event invited University administrators to be panelists and help answer student questions. These panelists included Dean of Students Tom DeMarco and Associate Vice President for Student Life Kathy Byrnes and Associate Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning Randy Weinstein.
The webinar was facilitated by Caroline Levine, the current Vice President and recently elected President of SGA for next year and Maggie Emamzadeh, a Liberal Arts Senator for SGA. Students had to register to attend the event, and on that form they were encouraged to include any questions that they wanted answered during the Town Hall. Levine and Emamzadeh took turns asking these questions to the panelists, while also allowing students to pose questions in the chat fu ....

Student Government Association Hosts Town Hall to Discuss Recent Reports of Sexual Assault

On Wednesday, Mar. 10, University President Rev. Peter M. Donohue, O.S.A., Ph.D. and the University’s Student Government Association hosted a Town Hall to address the sexual misconduct that has recently occurred on campus. Panel guests included Ryan Rost, Title IX Coordinator, Chief David Tedjeske, Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police, Stacey Andes, Director of Health Promotion and a Sexual Assault Resource Coordinator (SARC) and Amanda Rappa, Student Body President. The event was specifically in response to backlash after an email was sent to students on Mar. 3 notifying the community about various reports of sexual misconduct. Students and faculty voiced disappointment in the language and timing of the email. The event took place via Zoom in a webinar format, which only allowed the panel guests to speak. Questions were asked through a chat setting on Zoom and Rappa selected the questions that were asked most frequently. ....
