ECU named No 1 seed in Greenville Regional

The Greenville NCAA baseball regional will be held from June 4 through June 7 at Clark LeClair Stadium in Greenville, North Carolina. The East Carolina University Pirates baseball team (41-15, 20-8 American Athletic Conference) will play the Norfolk State University Spartans (25-26, 18-10 Mid Eastern Athletic Conference) at noon on June 4. The next game on June 4 will be the University of Maryland Terrapins (28-16, 28-16 Big Ten Conference) vs the University of North Carolina Charlotte 49ers (39-19, 24-8 Conference USA) at 6 p.m. On June 5, the loser of the game between ECU and Norfolk State will play the loser of the game between Maryland and UNC Charlotte at 1 p.m. Following that, the winners of both of those games will face each other at 6 p.m.

Pirates look toward NCAA Tournament

The East Carolina University Pirates baseball team finished the season on May 22 with a 38-14 record (20-8 American Athletic Conference, 27-4 home, 11-9 away) and a No.11 ranking in the nation.  The Pirates started the season with five straight wins. Those wins were against the University of Rhode Island Rams (27-24-1, 14-6 Atlantic 10) in a three game series, the Duke University Blue Devils (28-20, 16-17 Atlantic Coastal Conference) and the first game of the series against the Georgia Southern Eagles (31-22, 14-10 Sun Belt Conference).  ECU had five series sweeps in the 2021 season. Those sweeps were against Rhode Island from Feb. 19 through Feb. 21, the Appalachian State Mountaineers (20-30, 11-10 SBC) from March 5 through March 7, the University of North Carolina Charlotte 49ers (39-17, 24-8 Conference USA) from March 12 through March 14, the Illinois State University Redbirds (22-32, 12-15 Missouri Valley Conference) from March 19 through March 21, the University of Cinci

Bahamian athletes continue to perform well Bahamian collegiate athlete Shakeem Smith and the UTEP Miners men’s 4x100m relay team won a gold medal in that event at the Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The team of Smith, Sean Bailey, Dennis Johnson and Jevaughn Powell turned in a season’s best time of 40.03 seconds. Smith is shown at right. It was a busy weekend for track and field athletes in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and among them were several Bahamians who came away with strong performances. The Purdue University Boilermakers Tamar Greene successfully defended his Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships triple jump title in Champaign, Illinois. A wrist brace could not slow him down as he used his fourth attempt to leap for a season’s best 16.11 meters (m) (52’ 10-1/4”).
