Alberta study shows reduced neural activity in zebrafish exposed to THC, CBD or both

Article content Zebrafish exposed to THC in the earliest stages of their development saw a 70 per cent dive in neural activity later in life and the decrease, at over 70 per cent, was starker when they were immersed in CBD, the University of Alberta reports. If the same thing happens with humans, the researchers suggest that the findings could have implications for prenatal development in humans, an article posted on the university’s website notes. Opinion: Invest in stemming the overdose epidemic now — or pay more later

Article content In 2020, more Albertans died of overdose than of COVID-19. Yet while immense and increasing resources are (quite rightly) poured into the COVID-19 response, resources to stem the tide of our worsening overdose epidemic continue to be cut in this province. There is something fundamentally wrong with this picture. There is a large body of evidence showing that harm-reduction strategies such as clean-needle distribution, community access to naloxone, and supervised consumption sites (SCS) save lives, prevent disease, connect people to care, and help with social stability. They can also reduce the high costs of health care for infectious and other complications of drug use.

Alberta s Kenney tightens COVID rules to prevent looming hospital catastrophe, triage

EDMONTON Premier Jason Kenney, with surging COVID-19 rates threatening to overwhelm Alberta’s hospitals, is reintroducing stricter rules on gatherings, businesses and schools not seen since the first wave of the pandemic. Kenney, in a live address on TV, social media and the United Conservative government s website, said the next three weeks are critical and that potential catastrophe awaits. “If exponential growth of COVID-19 in Alberta continues, it would begin to push the outer limits of even our surged and expanded hospital capacity within weeks,” Kenney said Tuesday night. “We will not permit our health-care system to be overwhelmed. We must not and we will not force our doctors and nurses to decide who gets care and who doesn’t.”
