The Elder CItizens Recreation Centre has a new stage for drama club members and a new place for carpet bowling fans to show off their skills. The improvements are only part of a $1.4 million project that more doubles the space on the main floor of the seniors’ centre at 1692-10th Avenue. On Saturday, June 10 the public will have a chance to view what’s new at the popular seniors’ centre and take in a fun filled afternoon. For ECRA member Diane Reynolds it is a dream come true. “For so long we had to rehearse in the same room where the carpet bowlers wanted to play. Now we have our own space. There is room downstairs for the carpet bowlers and a whole room with a stage upstairs for us. We got beautiful new curtains for the stage and proper dressing rooms. So it is just a wonderful place for the drama club and singers to perform.” ....

Vette Claims Title alongside Stairmandâs Record Breaking 8th 2021 National Surfing Championships presented by The Trusts Community Foundation 19-year-old Saffi Vette of Gisborne has claimed an emotional national title at Piha today, bringing much of the surfing community present to tears as she exited the water. Vette was joined by Raglanâs Billy Stairmand who broke his own record to claim an eighth title in the Menâs Division. The 2021 National Surfing Championships presented by The Trusts Community Foundation climaxed with the premier divisions being contested in good 1.0m waves with light variable sea breeze winds. Vette faced off against the most talent laden field of finalists ever, a final filled with a World Tour surfer, ex World Junior Champion and the defending event champion, exiting the water with a win which she was quick to attribute to her father who passed away less than four months ago. ....
