When Penn State coach Jeff Tambroni describes this season as unlike anything he’s ever experienced, he’s not just talking about pandemic restrictions. That’s some of it, of course, but the Nittany Lions (1-2) have dealt with more moving pieces than most teams early in the season. Starting midfielder Jack Traynor and defenseman Brayden Peck, a multi-year starter, have missed back-to-back games. Midfielder Cole Willard left a Feb. 26 loss to Maryland in the first half with an injury. Dan Reaume, who started the first two games in the midfield, didn’t play in Saturday’s 15-13 defeat of Ohio State. ....

There were 11 games over Friday and Saturday involving at least one team in the top 15 of last week’s Nike/US Lacrosse Division I Top 20. The average margin of victory? 11.64 goals. The closest of the bunch? Maryland’s 13-7 triumph at Penn State on Friday in a game the Terrapins had firm control of by the end of the third quarter. There were romps on the road (Rutgers’ 22-12 defeat of Ohio State) and lopsided games at home (Georgetown’s 19-1 shellacking of St. John’s). There were overwhelming results for schools playing their first games of the season (Notre Dame, a 19-7 winner over Robert Morris) and those playing their sixth (Denver 23-10 against Providence). ....
