Deeside politicians press Shotton steel's case

DEESIDE politicians have been campaigning for the future of Shotton steel this week.
As the plant celebrates its 125th year of production, Mark Tami, MP for Alyn and Deeside, spoke in a debate at Westminster on the plant s history, and its future.
He raised concerns that the electricity costs of steel plants in the UK are nearly double those of German steelworks, and that the UK Government is still refusing to commit to buying UK steel for its own building projects.
Speaking in the debate, Mr Tami said This year marks the 125th year of production at Shotton steelworks on Deeside, which is a remarkable achievement. I hope and trust that we will see another 125 years. I doubt I will still be here to celebrate that, but we all live in hope. ....

Welsh universal basic income pilot could focus on care leavers

A proposed pilot for a universal basic income (UBI) in Wales could involve people leaving care, the Welsh government has said.
UBI would be a sum of money paid to everyone, which supporters say would ensure people do not fall through gaps in the benefit system.
Others argue it is not clear whether it would be the best way to ease poverty.
The UK government, which controls benefits, said it did not think it would be an incentive to work.
The plan revealed by First Minister Mark Drakeford at the weekend follows increased interest in the idea from policymakers and debates across the world, with a number of projects having taken place. ....

REACTION: Labour keep their Senedd seats for Alyn & Deeside and Delyn

Labour politician s Jack Sargeant and Hannah Blythyn have been re-elected to serve Flintshire in the Senedd after winning the 2021 elections.
LABOUR politicians in Flintshire have been able to keep their Senedd seats following a victory at the polls.
After a tense election campaign, both Hannah Blythyn and Jack Sargeant kept their titles for Delyn and Alyn & Deeside respectively.
The first Labour victory came from the Delyn team – when Ms Blythyn was announced as the official winner by several thousand votes.
Moments after learning she would be returning to the Senedd, she said: “Thank you to the constituents of Delyn, the community where I grew up and still live, for putting your trust and faith in me once again in our Senedd ....
