Chicago musicians say the blues will never die

Growing up on a sharecropper’s farm in Mississippi, Chicago blues musician John Primer lived in a wooden shack without running water and shared a bed with his cousins. Those hardships turned into material for blues music which he said should be felt deeply and emanated from the soul.
“When you have hard times, you got nothing but the blues,” Primer said. “When I’m playing it, it gives me the feeling that takes away all my pain.”
Primer started playing guitar at four years old and used his skills to play with prolific figures in the Chicago blues circuit, including Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon. ....

The Block and CNAIR work with Chicago's Native American community to plan exhibit

Chicago art museums have often failed to reflect the diverse Indigenous community still living in the city, but a new grant hopes to change that.
Northwestern’s Block Museum of Art announced it will receive a $105,000 grant from the Terra Foundation for American Art to fund an Indigenous art exhibit slated to open in Jan. 2024. The museum outlined in a grant proposal a process for robust engagement with the Chicago Native American community.
Kathleen Bickford Berzock, the associate director of curatorial affairs at the Block Museum, said the exhibit is the culmination of the museum’s efforts to integrate American Indian programming. The grant will fund the salary of both a curatorial research fellow and an American Indian guest curator who will work alongside Berzock and the Block’s contemporary curator, Janet Dees. ....

Splits releases "vice versa," a reflection on resilience

This album’s cover art depicts four koi fish for the four members of the band.
“Koi fish in Japan (are) associated with perseverance, adversity, strength and purpose, so we thought that connected with the idea for the record,” vocalist Taylor Ericson said. “Because they are swimming in a circle, that also touches on this idea that you can be resilient with the right group.”
Claire Zhang, lead guitarist, said the album’s message is to gather inner strength and not give up on yourself, a point she has found especially relevant amid the global pandemic.
With the band spending lots of time fleshing out parts of songs, Zhang said “vice versa” is musically stronger than the band’s debut EP. ....

Many will look back at the year 2020 and wish to forget it, and for good reasons. While we remember the many difficulties and challenges, we come away from the past year grateful and humbled. Amidst a global pandemic and continually changing public directives and orders, the men and women of the Charles County Sheriff’s Office were able to continue operations to provide services to the citizens of Charles County. Our officers on the front lines responded to calls and were recognized for meritorious service and lifesaving work. Most importantly, our community came together, on many occasions, to show support for one another. Here is a positive look back at 2020: ....

Cold brings fewer homeless to shelter this year

PORT JERVIS - Hangouts are scarce for homeless people on cold days, now that libraries and restaurants are closed to visitors because of the pandemic.
“The numbers coming to shelters are down across the county,” said Jack Austin, a longtime volunteer at the Port Jervis Warming Station at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. “I don’t know why. Maybe the homeless are smoothing things out with relatives, so they have better situations.”
He notices them walking around Port Jervis, going in and out of Dollar General, Family Dollar and Rite Aid. Save-A-Lot has machines where they can redeem bottles and cans they collect in huge bags. They spend that money and handouts as they go in and out of stores to stay warm, he said. ....
