Updated 3/6/2021 4:05 PM A 29-year-old Chicago man died Saturday from gunshot wounds sustained in a drug deal Thursday night in unincorporated Palatine Township, authorities said. Cook County Sheriff s Police say the shooting stemmed from a confrontation between a marijuana seller and a prospective buyer outside an apartment complex about 10:40 p.m. Thursday on the 1500 block of Silver Lane, located just south of Dundee Road and west of Route 53.
Police said a 27-year-old man was waiting in a vehicle outside his apartment to purchase marijuana from the 29-year-old man. When the seller got into the car, he pointed a gun at the 27-year-old and announced a robbery, authorities said. ....

I thought, There s elderly people. There s veterans. There s Section 8 (low-income housing) people that can t go to the store. They can t go do things. That kind of motivated me, the Palatine resident said. I ve been lucky to move beyond my childhood experience, and I decided at that point that something had to be done.
She reached out to two friends in April and together they gathered a small group of volunteers. In the last 11 months, the initiative has grown into an organized group called People Helping People of Palatine that has served thousands of hot meals, provided 75 grocery bags and more than 100 meal kits, and distributed 185 water bottle care kits to people in need including seniors, veterans, families of local students, homeless residents and other community members. Updated 3/5/2021 8:48 AM The Illinois Department of Public Health will partner with Chicago Behavioral Hospital to administer vaccines to residents in Des Plaines and surrounding communities, State Senator Laura Murphy (D-Des Plaines) announced today. Expanding access to the vaccine is especially important in the communities hit hardest by COVID-19, where rates of transmission, hospitalization and death are higher, Murphy said. This partnership with Chicago Behavioral Hospital will provide local residents a safe and convenient place to get vaccinated, which I hope will help our community bounce back and prevent further tragedy for the individuals and families who have been impacted by this pandemic. ....

While charitable and non-profit organizations with a 501(c)(3) designation are invited to apply, this is not a requirement.
