Surrounding the jagged limestone cliffs of Christmas Island is an aquatic utopia where one man braves the seas with a rod and reel to sustain the population.

His company Shorefire has operated since 1994, first as a charter business and then as a licensed fishing operation.
Mr Rochfort, who is nearly 60, says he still reels in fish weighing up to 200 kilograms. ....

Perceptive Travel Book Reviews February 2021

Perceptive Travel Book Reviews February 2021
by Susan Griffith
In this issue: A brilliantly entertaining account both funny and serious of cycling across five continents, an exhaustive (and exhausting) description of an expat summer in Galicia, and a diverting compendium of travel puzzles and quizzes.
By Stephen Fabes

At age 29, after practicing medicine for a couple of years in the emergency department of a London hospital, the author self-diagnoses a case of
Sehnsucht, which translates as yearning for ideal alternative experiences. He later uses another word new to me which could be construed in the same way: dromomania is a psychiatric diagnosis (no longer current) of wanderlust, desire for frequent traveling. (Perhaps we are all psychologically suffering from this at the moment!) ....

Christmas Island | Geography & History

First sighted in 1615 by Richard Rowe, master of the
Thomas, the island was named on Christmas Day 1643 by Captain William Mynors of the British East India Company. In 1887 specimens of soil and rock were collected by the men of HMS
Egeria; the British naturalist John Murray analyzed the specimens and found that they were nearly pure phosphate of lime. In 1888 the island was annexed by Great Britain, and the first settlement was established at Flying Fish Cove by George Clunies-Ross of Cocos (Keeling) Islands. A 99-year lease, granted in 1891 to Clunies-Ross and Murray, to mine phosphate and cut timber was transferred six years later to the Christmas Island Phosphate Company, Ltd., which was largely owned by the former lessees. In 1900 Christmas Island was incorporated in the British crown colony of the Straits Settlements with its capital at Singapore. During World War II the island was occupied by the Japanese. In 1948 the governments of New Zealand and Australia acqui ....
