Central College’s music department will conclude the Spring 2021 semester with four performances in May. The A Cappella Choir will perform a virtual pre-tour concert at 3 p.m. Sunday in Douwstra Auditorium on Hoekstra Family stage. The performance will be directed by Mark Babcock, professor of music, director of choirs and M. Joan Kuyper Farver Endowed Chair in Music. A virtual performance by the Symphonic Wind Ensemble will follow at 5 p.m. and will be directed by Eileen McGonigal, assistant professor of music. The String Ensemble will perform at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, in Douwstra Auditorium on Hoekstra Family Stage. The concert will be conducted by John Helmich, adjunct instructor of music. Central College’s music department will showcase three virtual performances this month, with the first this week. Concerts will kick off with a Symphonic Wind Ensemble concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Douwstra Auditorium. The event will feature a solo by Katey Halbert, adjunct instructor, on the French horn. Halbert will perform “Pele” by Brian Balmages, inspired by the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes and fire by the same name. The performance will be streamed on YT Premiere and directed by Eileen McGonigal, assistant professor of music. Next, ALMA will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, March 26, in Cox-Snow Music Center. The performance will be livestreamed and directed by Gabriel Espinosa, associate professor of music. ....
