Niesha White Unites Black Tech Lovers in Birmingham

When Niesha White moved to Birmingham seven years ago to pursue a career in technology, the Dothan, Alabama, native surveyed the local tech scene and noticed that something was missing people who looked like her.
“With me being a transplant to Birmingham, it was hard to know what was going on and who to connect with,” White said.
She visited Meetup.com in search of a group for Black Birmingham residents interested in technology, but she couldn’t find one. So, in January 2020, she decided to form her own.
White, 29, is the founder of Birmingham Black Techies (BBT), a community for people who want to get advice and share knowledge and resources about all things tech and make new friends along the way. ....

THE CONCEPT. WHEN AYESHA WHITE MOVED HERE FROM SOUTH ALABAMA, I WILL GO TO WORK AND MOST OF MY COLLEAGUES DID NOT LOOK LIKE ME. IT’S VERY SMALL PORTION OF BLACK PEOPLE IN TECH BUT A VERY VERY SMALL PORTION OF BLACK WOMEN AND TAKE SO ABOUT A YEAR AGO. SHE FOUNDED BIRMINGHAM BLACK TECHIES. IT’S FOR WOMEN AND TO SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES THEIR CULTURE AND THEIR CAREER POSSIBILITIES THROUGH JOB FAIRS. AND THIS WEEK’S BLACK TECH TAKEOVER MEETINGS. I JUST FEEL IT WAS NECESSARY BECAUSE WITH BIRMINGHAM BEING A MAJORITY BLACK CITY. I JUST FELT THAT NEEDS TO BE SOME KIND OF FOCUS ON BLACK PEOPLE AND TECH SPECIFICALLY LIKE SOMETHING THAT’S SPECIFICALLY SAID, THIS IS FOR BLACK PEOPLE AND BIRMINGHAM AND THEY WANT EVERYONE FROM BLACK HIGH SCHOOLER ....
