£30,000 shop front grant scheme launches in Burnham-On-Sea town centre Burnham-On-Sea & Highbridge Town Council is calling on independent retail and service providers, and landlords of vacant premises, in Burnham town centre to apply for a new grant of up to £1,000. The grants are being offered to encourage new and existing retail/service businesses and landlords to make permanent visual improvements to their shop fronts, including vacant premises. There is no requirement for the applicant to provide match funding, but applicants are encouraged to provide funding where they can. It comes as the Town Council has received £30,000 from Sedgemoor District Councilâs Hinkley Tourism Action Partnership to offer the shop front grants in connection with the Burnham Evolution Plan. ....
Rusting fingerpost signs in Burnham-On-Sea to be refurbished in council upgrade The council’s Town Improvements Committee agreed the work at its latest meeting last week. A black and gold design will be used on the refurbished fingerposts, which will replace the current rusting ones, pictured here. A council spokesperson added: “There is £12,500 in the Burnham Evolution budget to cover the purchase and installation of seafront signage and town fingerposts, including repainting existing posts and the installation of an entirely new one. Refurb and replacement of the fingerposts in the town will be undertaken first.” We recently reported here that the Burnham Evolution project will also repaint bollards along Burnham’s Esplanade, and introduce new benches, gull-proof litter bins and picnic tables. ....
Burnham seafront residents step up calls for proposed new play area to be moved A group of residents in Burnham-On-Sea have this week stepped up their campaign to get a planned new play area moved to another part of the seafront, saying their concerns about the proposed location are being ‘ignored’ by local councils. As first reported here, residents of Quantock Court say that while they support the idea of a new seafront play area, the tarmac area on the South Esplanade earmarked for the new facilities is “unsuitable” as it is ‘regularly used’ for various outdoor activities by families, runners, dog walkers, keep fit enthusiasts and cyclists, and is also overlooked by their flats. ....
New decorative lighting to be introduced along Burnham seafront New decorative lighting is set to return to Burnham-On-Sea’s seafront after town councillors gave the go-ahead at their latest meeting. At a virtual meeting of March’s full council meeting, Burnham and Highbridge town councillors decided to proceed with the revamp of lighting. “Decorative seafront lighting will be strung between the existing lampposts at a cost of £10,708,” it was resolved. The proposals have been welcomed by tourism businesses along the seafront who say having attractions such as lighting make Burnham’s Esplanade more inviting. The seafront used to have colourful decorative lighting attached to lamposts but many were damaged during a big storm in 2007. ....
Plans for £7,000 Burnham-On-Sea seawall art project given boost Plans for a new seawall art project along part of Burnham-On-Sea’s seafront have been given a boost with an injection of funding and the appointment of a regional arts getting to get involved with managing it. The Town Council has recently been given £7,000 of funding by Sedgemoor District Council to proceed with the art project on Burnham’s South Esplanade. Furthermore, at a virtual meeting of the Town Council’s Town Improvements Committee this month, town councillors agreed to appoint regional arts group Seed to help oversee the project. The proposed artwork on the sea wall would “respond to the local natural environment, celebrating the ecology of this part of Bridgwater Bay. It will depict, describe or interpret an aspect of local wildlife and/or flora in a way that will encourage visitors and the local community to appreciate the value and distinctiveness of the place in a new way. ....
