'UK regulations favour energy imports' - reNews - Renewable Energy News

Green infrastructure investment is being jeopardised by regulations in the UK that favour EU energy imports, according to new research by the Renewable Infrastructure Development Group (RIDG).
The research shows that operators in Germany, France and the Netherlands are able to export energy cheaper than projects in the UK, because they pay low transmission charges or none at all, the researchers found.
Electricity generators in the UK pay transmission charges for the cost of building and maintaining the network, set by the regulator Ofgem and ultimately paid by consumers as part of their bills, RIDG noted.
Therefore, the UK risks becoming a net importer of renewable energy in the decades ahead, despite having the best wind energy resource in Europe which should, with the right regulations in place, be used to drive export-led growth, said trade group RenewableUK. ....

Transmission Charges a Threat to UK Green Energy Industry - Report

Britain’s energy regulators are putting billions of pounds of green infrastructure investment at risk by overseeing an energy market which favours EU energy imports at the expense of home-grown schemes, new research has shown.
Electricity generators in the UK pay transmission charges for the cost of building and maintaining the network, set by the regulator Ofgem and ultimately paid by consumers as part of their bills.
New analysis by RIDG (Renewable Infrastructure Development Group), a member company of RenewableUK, highlights the stark anomalies in how electricity generators access the GB market, with operators in Germany, France, and the Netherlands able to export energy significantly cheaper than projects in the UK, because they pay very low transmission charges, or none at all, RenewableUK said. ....

How the UK offshore wind industry can deliver 40GW by 2030

Today there are more than 3,000 turbines either in operation or under construction in the UK’s waters. Considering that the first turbine was only installed 20 years ago, this represents a staggering level of growth. However, even when you combine the 10GW of installed capacity and the 10-15GW pipeline of consented projects, the industry still has its work cut out to install 40GW by 2030. So what needs to happen to ensure this target is met and to help deliver the UK’s net zero 2050 goal?

Olivia Thomas, head of marine planning at the Crown Estate, says the industry has reached a point where a strategic approach is needed to address some of the environmental interactions the industry has as a whole. “We need to be thinking smartly about what we have by way of data and evidence and look at the information that is provided by industry at the post-consent monitoring point.” Thomas refers to the Offshore Wind Evidence an ....
