The past year managed to bring both hardships and victories to Henderson County.
Countless lives have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with thousands of reported cases, nearly 100 deaths, and many people losing their jobs due to the economic fallout from the pandemic.
The community lost some of its beloved leaders, including Henderson County Commissioner Charlie Messer, who died suddenly in July; former Fletcher Mayor Bill Moore; and Sheriff s Office deputy Ryan Hendrix, who was killed in the line of duty in September.
Some light has come out of 2020, from developments bringing jobs and housing to the county to increased calls for social justice and a focus on equality. ....

Citing the surge in Covid-19 cases, the Henderson County Board of Commissioners has canceled its regularly scheduled meeting of Monday, Jan. 4.

The county, which had avoided a surge in cases experts had projected since March, has seen a big increase in cases since the Thanksgiving holiday.

The wave of Covid patients that we expected eight months ago didn t happen in March but it s here now, Dr. David Ellis told reporters on Tuesday. Pardee currently has 44 patients. Over the past week we ve seen the case counts rise dramatically and we don t see that changing in the near future.
The surge in cases vaulted Henderson County from the least severe rating to the most critical yellow to red. Henderson County was not alone; sixty-five counties across the state are now in the red zone.
“North Carolina needs to drive down our numbers, Gov. Roy Cooper said during a news conference Tuesday. To do that, we all need to change our holiday plans if you haven’t already. The best and safest option is to connect virtually or by phone. But if you gather in-person, keep it small and do it outside. Get a Covid-19 test before you go. Spread out the tables and chairs. ....

Vaccinations are rolling out across Western North Carolina. Mission Health is the latest to start administering the COVID vaccine to at risk health care workers. The system received just under 3,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine. Pardee Hospital in Hendersonville started giving the shots on Tuesday (12/15)and Cherokee Indian Hospital – on Wednesday. The shots arrived as the state continued to see record case numbers and hospitalizations. BPR’s Helen Chickering checks in on the metrics and vaccines with North Carolina with NC Health News editor Rose Hoban.
