Council member Wanda Smith, who sponsored an ordinance to make Eighth of August an official city holiday in February, said Emancipation Day s is essential to the community as the day freed enslaved people in the state of Tennessee, impacted the Civil War and changed the course of history for tens of millions of African-Americans. The Emancipation Proclamation was announced on Jan. 1, 1863, but it didn t go into effect in Tennessee until August 8 when former Lt. Governor Andrew Johnson freed masses from slavery. ....

CLARKSVILLE , TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Clarksville Parks & Recreation is inviting the public to participate in the first-ever Burt-Cobb Break Out: Escape Room. Burt-Cobb Recreation Center has put together an in-house interactive escape room. Participants will work together to find clues and solve riddles to help the Burt-Cobb Alumni Association save their reunion within the allotted time, according to a news release from Clarksville Parks and Recreation. “Your experience will be challenging, tricky, and fun,” said Penny Greene, Assistant Manager of Burt-Cobb Recreation Center. “Our Escape Room will keep you on your toes every step of the way.” The Burt-Cobb Escape Room is open to ages 13 and older. Masks are required and groups can range from four to eight people. The sessions will begin on Feb. 19 and will go through Aug. 28 on various Fridays and Saturdays, according to the release. Clarksville Now CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Clarksville Parks & Recreation will close some indoor facilities and its main office to the public until Jan. 21, 2021, as part of the City’s efforts to follow Executive Order No. 70 issued by Gov. Bill Lee on Sunday. All parks and trails will remain open, however.
