Pillars of smoke swirling around Northland show the open fire season has begun as landowners tidy their properties.
However, the summer drought conditions have left a moisture deficit in several areas of Northland and firefighters
have been kept busy with callouts.
Fire and Emergency deputy principal rural fire officer Michael Champtaloup urged landowners to take extra care, especially in the west and Far North.
It s what farmers call a green drought. The public sees green grass and think it s okay to set fires but it is still quite dry underneath, he said. ....

South Carolina shellfish harvest season to close May 25
CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. South Carolina’s 2020-2021 season for harvest of oysters, mussels, clams and all other bivalves from State Shellfish Grounds and Public Shellfish Grounds will close on Tuesday, May 25, 2021, at one half hour after official sunset, according to South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) officials.
Because higher bacterial levels occur when water temperatures exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit, shellfish harvesting during the summer months is limited to commercial harvesters who can meet rigorous handling requirements. Coastal waters will remain closed to recreational shellfish harvesting until the fall, when water temperatures begin to cool and ensure that shellfish are once again safe for harvesting and consumption. Shellfish harvesting is expected to reopen October 1, 2021. ....

Jonathan Gregson, of Wellsford, has caught the attention of the New Zealand drag racing circuit in his first season, being named “Rookie of the Year” at the NAPA Auto Parts Dragway Comp Series.
Gregson drives a front-engine dragster, powered by a naturally aspirated 166 cubic inch, four cylinder, Fontana engine.
His best time and speed to date, over a quarter mile, is 9.583 seconds at 136.2mph. That is the equivalent of accelerating from 0 to 220kph in 400 metres in 9.5 seconds. That time is just 0.13 milliseconds off the current class record, which stands at 9.453 seconds. Gregson says he intends to break the record next year. ....
