Josh Kirkman has lived and surfed in Tuncurry most of his life, but he’s never experienced the town the way it’s been this week.
On Tuesday morning, May 18, a surfer was attacked and killed by what’s estimated to be a four and a half metre white shark, close to shore on Tuncurry Beach, just down from the break-wall.
Having grown up in neighbouring Forster, my phone lit up soon after. So did Josh’s. “That’s the thing that goes through your mind when you hear about a shark attack at 11am. on a Tuesday,” he says. “That it’s one of your mates. It has to be.” ....

A surfer in his 50s has died after being bitten by a shark at Tuncurry on the NSW mid-north coast.
The attack occurred around 11:15 am today. Despite a massive emergency response, including several ambulances and a helicopter from Sydney, the surfer died at around 12:40pm. The Department of Primary Industries, which runs fisheries and shark management, says it has not yet identified the shark species involved and is still gathering information about the attack.

The 63-year-old was reported missing on April 29 after he didn’t return home from work.
CCTV footage confirmed he was last seen leaving his home on Pindimar Road, Pindimar around 7:30am.
He is believed to be driving a white coloured Holden combo van, with NSW registration UQG-146, which has ‘catering’ written on the side.
He may also have power tools and firewood on board his vehicle.
Police have conducted land and air searches but have not located Mr Bentley or his vehicle.
He is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 179cm tall, of medium build with short brown and grey hair and a beard. ....
