Mayor Mike Palm plans to step down after three terms as 'spokesperson' for Baraboo


Mayor Mike Palm can clearly recall the first time he was elected in 2012, and after nine years have passed by quickly, he said this term will be his last.
“I think it’s important for people to realize, in my view, nobody should serve forever,” Palm said.
Palm’s life in public service began during his private career, when he worked for MSA and municipalities throughout the state for 23 years. When he and his family moved to Baraboo in 1988, Palm said they didn’t know a single person, but the family quickly adopted the city as home and that the city did the same. ....

BREAKING: Baraboo police chief investigation concludes no misconduct in personal relationship with city employee


Baraboo Police Chief Mark Schauf, who was suspended for nearly three months with pay, has returned to work after an investigation into possible misconduct regarding a personal relationship found he had not acted improperly.
According to a press release issued by Mayor Mike Palm around 4:30 p.m. Friday, Schauf had reported to his duties that day after being issued a one-day unpaid suspension for violating a city policy by not reporting that he had responded to a domestic abuse call within the city.
Palm said the investigation was “into the circumstances of a relationship he had with a City department head.” ....

Baraboo council changes Police and Fire Commission to appointed, not elected positions after legal concerns


Baraboo Common Council members expedited an ordinance Tuesday after being told by more than one attorney that the city’s Police and Fire Commission was formed against state law.
“Currently, the police department has a police chief that’s suspended from employment here and my concern would be any litigation involving that because my assumption is that Chief Schauf has hired a labor attorney, and that the city would be under liability in any decision made,” Council President Joel Petty said. “.It might be a situation that his attorney could use to his benefit.”
The investigation remains ongoing and city officials will not state publicly why suspended Baraboo Police Chief Mark Schauf was placed on paid leave, continuing to collect his annual salary of $99,528, since Sept. 15. ....
