WISCONSIN EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT PRESS RELEASE: FEMA Awards $1 Million to Village of La Valle
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Wisconsin Emergency Management (WEM) announced today that the village of La Valle, Wisc. was awarded $1,021,441 in Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) funds for the acquisition and demolition of five flood-prone properties. To reduce the community’s flood vulnerability, these structures will be removed from the floodplain of the Baraboo River, and the area transitioned into open green space.
“The Hazard Mitigation Grant Program helps create safer communities by reducing loss of life and property damage,” said Kevin M. Sligh, acting regional administrator, FEMA Region 5. “This project will eliminate future structural losses in La Valle by permanently removing these properties from the floodplain, greatly reducing the financial impact on individuals and the community.”

As kids, how many of us said we were going to run away to the circus? Well, perhaps a trip to Baraboo, Wisconsin, with its circus history is the next best thing! This lovely Wisconsin town is located on Highway 12 North of Madison and is near the Wisconsin Dells. Visitors can stay at a mansion where one of the Ringling Brothers lived and tour another brother’s mansion. You can visit the Circus World Museum or walk by the Al Ringling Theater. All over Baraboo, there are historical markers and remnants of Circus life in the Birthplace of The Greatest Show on Earth.

Three days into fishing the opening week in Wisconsin, Tim Baker realized he had already caught his first sturgeon, a muskie and a northern pike.
“That’s when I decided to go on a quest for catching the most species possible in one week’s time,” he said.
I love quixotic quests.
He ended up with 15 species: Beside sturgeon, muskie and pike, he caught walleye, bowfin, crappie, bluegill, pumpkinseed, bullhead, channel catfish, carp, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, brown trout and brook trout.
The sturgeon was “extra special.”
“[It] came from the Baraboo River, which is 120 miles long and one of the largest restored free-flowing rivers in America,” Baker noted. “The sturgeon was the most enjoyable. I’ve fished the Baraboo River for over 20 years, and I’ve had family members fishing for even longer. This week was the first time any of us caught a sturgeon from there.”
