Brookline High School seniors Katherine O’Connor and Samantha Brady-Myerov received the Sara K. Wallace Leadership Award of the League of Women Voters of Brookline at the annual Brookline High School awards ceremony May 4.
Named for a resident who served Brookline for decades as a leader and advocate, the SKW award is given annually to a student or students who represent the League’s ideals of community service and civic activism.
Katherine O’Connor has provided social justice leadership by advocating for the LGBTQ community, serving as site coordinator for Get Out the Vote, presenting “Day of Perspective” programs at Baker School addressing race and racism and holding state and national level internships, including at the National Center for Transgender Equality in Washington D.C. and with the Massachusetts Commission for LGBTQ+ Youth.

Brookline s 2021 Women of the Year have dedicated time and energy to championing social justice causes and uplifting members of their community. On Wednesday, it was their turn to be celebrated.
The Brookline Commission for Women chose awardees from a list of 25 nominees. Unlike in previous years, the Commission chose more than one winner, with Commission Chair Rebecca Stone citing the special circumstances of the past year.
“This year, the Commission decided we didn t want to try to choose just one person because women have been so much of the response to the extraordinary challenges of these times,” Stone said.
