COVID-19 in Bayonne Cavanaugh said that for almost a year, the BHD, led by Michelle O’ Reilly, has been working nonstop to educate, monitor, trace, and vaccinate the community. Over the last few months, active cases of COVID-19 have been on the rise, she said. As of Jan 28, there were under 500 active cases, according to Office of Emergency Management. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 98 residents have died, and 4,086 have recovered as of Jan. 21. ....
× A local senior receives the first dose of the Moderna vaccine on Jan. 21 at Bayonne Medical Center. On Jan. 21, individuals at high risk began receiving the vaccine in Bayonne as part of Phase 1B. That includes seniors over the age of 65 and anyone between 16 and 64 with serious medical conditions. As Phase 1B continues, those in Phase 1A can still be vaccinated. According to the state, Phase 1A includes healthcare personnel and long-term care facility workers and residents. Phase 1B includes first responders and individuals at high risk. Additional essential workers and other individuals at high risk may be vaccinated later in Phase 1B and or in Phase 1C. The general public will receive the vaccine in Phase 2. ....

H. Gene Sykes, who served as pastor of the Friend Baptist Church for more than 25 years. Rev. Sykes, whose career was defined by a strong belief that all people should have a roof over their head and a full stomach, died due to complications of COVID-19 in April. “We wanted to do something sooner, but with COVID, this got delayed,” said Council President Sharon Ashe-Nadrowski. “But we didn’t want to wait any long and have people forget about him. He was very important in our community.” ....

Bayonne has moved to rename a street after the late Rev. H. Gene Sykes of Friendship Baptist Church. In April of 2020, Sykes passed away from COVID-19. He was 78. Sykes’s death was one of the many tragic losses from COVID-19. He was the eleventh resident to die from the virus. A long-lasting legacy Before becoming a clergyman, Sykes was an engineer and a flight crew trainer for the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. After the war, he continued engineer work for private companies before becoming a faith leader. ....
× Police Chief Robert Geisler receives the first dose of the Moderna vaccine on Jan. 8. As of Jan. 14, those who can receive the COVID-19 vaccine expanded from hospital personnel, long-term care facility residents and staff, and first responders to include individuals at high risk. On Jan. 8, law enforcement and firefighters began receiving the vaccine at Bayonne Medical Center as part of Phase 1B. Among those to get their first doses of the vaccine were Police Chief Robert Geisler and Fire Chief Keith Weaver. “Today the Bayonne Medical Center began inoculating Bayonne Police Department and Bayonne Fire Department personnel,” Geisler said on Jan. 8. “Thank you to all the frontline hero health professionals at BMC. Thank you to the staff administering our vaccines, and thank you to Dr. Singh and everyone at BMC for their continued support and partnership with the Bayonne Police Department.” ....
